“You always end up in the hospital when you fight with Ryeowook,” Kyuhyun’s mother said as she cleaned off the tray from his bedside table. Kyuhyun had only picked at his lunch, instead of actually eating it. He debated playing the deaf card, but curiosity got the better of him.

“Why do you say that? It makes no sense at all. How was the accident Ryeowook’s fault? How are the bad ears that I inherited from you and dad Ryeowook’s fault?”

“Oh, it isn’t Ryeowook’s fault at all. He isn’t the one that doesn’t eat and doesn’t take care of himself…that would be you. Also, don’t forget all those times you had to spend the night in the hospital in China, because you let yourself become dehydrated,” his mother reminded him.

“We weren’t always fighting.” Kyuhyun told his mother, managing to get the lie past his lips, while doing his best to avoid his mother’s gaze.

Kyuhyun’s mother, who was tall, educated, and beautiful, looked down at her son with loving, if not easily fooled eyes. She walked up to him, placed her hand under his chin and gently tilted his head up until they were eye to eye. “Kyuhyun, friends fight, but you take it too hard.”

“I do not! Nobody thinks that! They think that I don’t even care about our stupid fight,” Kyuhyun said, pulling away from her gaze quickly. He soon regretted doing so, as pain went shooting through the right side of his head.

“Baby, it is okay to miss your friend. You are both too stubborn, and this has dragged on too long. Maybe you should be the one to give in this time.”

“I am not giving in.”

“Once again, what was the fight really about?” The whole time Kyuhyun had been home with her recuperating from his ear surgery, he had never told her. She had tried countless times to find out the real reason for the disagreement that had put such a strain on her son’s bond with his friend Ryeowook.

“Nothing,” Kyuhyun said, trying to turn his head away without turning the world upside-down. He had almost made it when he eyed Sungmin standing in the doorway.

“That’s exactly what Ryeowook says…the fight was about nothing,” Sungmin told Mrs. Cho as he walked into the room.

“How much did you hear? You know my mom is a little crazy.” He trusted Sungmin with his life, but he didn’t want his mom’s theory about his health and how it correlated with his relationship with Ryeowook to be known to anyone.

“You’re going to think I'm crazy, you brat. I have some shopping to do, so I will leave you two alone,” Mrs. Cho told them as she rolled her eyes at her son. She gave Kyuhyun a kiss on the forehead. She then turned to Sungmin giving him a warm smile and a squeeze on the shoulder as she walked out of the room.

Sungmin walked over and sat in the chair next to Kyuhyun’s bed without saying a word. He took out his phone and started playing with it, ignoring Kyuhyun totally. They played this game for a good fifteen minutes before Sungmin finally had mercy on his sickly friend. “Well, yesterday was lots of fun.”

“Really? What did you do?”

“Hung out with the F(x) girls.”

“We celebrated Ryeowook’s birthday. I know you forgot, with all the infection in your head, that it’s June, and it was the 21st yesterday.”

Kyuhyun gently touched the bandage on his head. “Well, I did have a fever yesterday of 103, and I was busy getting readmitted to the hospital and all.”

“Well lucky for you that Ryeowook is such an understanding friend, so he will totally understand why you are a day late.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You are going to call him and wish him a happy belated birthday.”

“I am not! We are fighting.”

“The big fight about nothing?”

“Yes! Also I don’t see him calling and checking on me. In fact, I don’t recall him ever visiting, or so much as sending me a get well card.”

“Kyuhyun, you’re such an idiot sometimes; it isn’t like - ”

“It isn’t like what?” He tried to turn his head so he could look at his friend, but the room started to spin. “Move where I can see you,” he said, wincing.

“No, I don’t want to look at you. It’s hard to be mean to you if I have to look at your pitiful face.”

“What isn’t like what?” Kyuhyun growled. He would not be swayed. He rested his head once again against his pillow as gently and slowly as possible.

“It isn’t like you being in the hospital is a big thing; you’re always sick. I mean if you were healthy for an extended period of time…that would be a big deal,” Sungmin answered.

“I have been healthy almost all of this year! Just admit it Ryeowook is a bad friend! He’s much worse than me. I am not wishing him a happy birthday from my sick bed or anywhere else.”

“Okay then, if you two aren’t interesting in becoming friends again, then why should I try to mend fences? You will get better someday, and Ryeowook seems happy enough.” There was a mischievous glint in Sungmin’s eyes that Kyuhyun couldn’t see from his perch on the bed.

“He’s happy? Well, it must be nice to be healthy and to be able to enjoy parties thrown for you. I mean it was on a freeway, so how much fun could it have been?”

“I don’t remember telling you it was on a freeway?” Sungmin pointed out with a huge grin on his face.

“You know I can still read. I might have opened up a fan site and got bombarded with your tacky pictures from the party.”

“Well, at least you got to see the girls too. They are getting so pretty don’t you think? Ryeowook really enjoyed his party. Do you know if he has a thing for Sulli, or is it Luna now? I couldn’t really tell yesterday; he seemed to really be enjoying both of their attentions…if you know what I mean?”

“I know he has the utmost respect for Luna’s singing ability,” Kyuhyun said with his eyes closed. He picked up the call light and debated whether he should call for the nurse. His headache was suddenly worse.

“Well, not everything is judged on a person’s singing ability.”

“Sadly, no.” Kyuhyun said as he hit the call light.

“Of course, in your mind, you would rule the world if it was. I would probably end up your personal servant and I - ” Sungmin stopped as the nurse walked into the room. Sungmin watched as the nurse checked Kyuhyun over, repositioned his head, assessed his pain and gave him two pills to swallow.

The nurse looked at Sungmin. “He’s going to get sleepy. Let him rest, or you will have to leave.” Sungmin nodded his head in understanding, but he couldn’t leave yet. He still had one more thing he had to do.

Sungmin waited patiently as Kyuhyun finally drifted off to sleep, and then he snatched his friend’s cell phone off the bedside table and began texting away.

Later that evening Sungmin went in search of Ryeowook, and found the other man cooking away in their dorm. Sungmin approached his friend cautiously and leaned up against the cabinet to watch him cook. “How was your day?”

“Spent most of it at the studio doing final touchups, and it seemed to drag on forever.”

“Nothing else?” Sungmin quizzed.

“The company delivered some more fan gifts for me. I think the fans want me to gain weight. You should see all the food they sent. Feel free to take what you want from my room before everybody gets home and has a go at it,” Ryeowook said as he stirred a pot on the stove.

“If you got all kinds of food then what are you making?” Sungmin said with a big grin appearing on his face.

“Heechul made me promise to make him some soup. He has forgone all fattening food again,” Ryeowook said, rolling his eyes.

Sungmin’s smile vanished. “Have you spoken with anybody today…anybody who is sick?”

Ryeowook turned away from his stirring to eye Sungmin carefully. “I spoke with my grandmother today and promised her I would go see her the next day I had free.”

“Nobody else?” Sungmin’s disappointment could clearly be heard and seen, as his brows furrowed.

“Why, should I have?” Ryeowook asked as he turned his attention back to the stove.

“It’s just odd. I visited Kyuhyun today, and I just had a strong feeling that you would hear from him today.”

“It was you, then.” Ryeowook said. He put down his spoon and turned to face his friend, placing both hands on his hips. “I was wondering if it was you or Donghae.”

“I don’t know what you are talking about.” Sungmin said as he picked up a carrot and inspected it, avoiding Ryeowook’s glare.

“I am talking about a text message I got from Kyuhyun’s phone that was most certainly not him. All the ‘please’ and ‘I’m so sorry’ totally gave it away. If I was a fool and didn’t know him better, I would have totally walked into a disaster.”

“It wouldn’t have been a disaster. He misses you terribly; he just won’t admit it. You guys would have talked, and you would have forgiven him. The stupid fight about nothing would have been forgotten.”

“First of all, the stupid fight about nothing was my fault, so Kyuhyun won’t be apologizing for it or forgetting about it anytime soon," Ryeowook admitted, anger lacing his words.

“It’s your fault?” Sungmin’s surprise could clearly be heard in his voice.

“Yes, my fault. Apologizing won’t make it any better. I have already done that. Distance is the only thing that will help our friendship, so I am going to keep my distance. So quit harassing him when he’s sick and stealing his phone…….how did you manage that by the way? He always keeps it locked.”

“How can it be your fault? You’re so nice, and he’s such a brat. I mean how can it be your fault?” Sungmin stopped as he saw the look of annoyance on Ryeowook’s face.

“Well his phone has the same password that’s on his computer. I have seen him type it in enough times to know it. After he took his pain medicine, he just fell asleep, and I snatched the phone.”

“He’s on pain medicine? I thought you told me he wasn’t in any pain?” Ryeowook asked, turning off the stove. Sungmin now had his complete attention.

“He wasn’t at first, but he looks miserable now. I don’t blame him for taking it. The right side of his face is all puffy.”

“I thought he was back in the hospital for just a follow-up?”

“I know that’s what the company said. He told me he had 103 degree temperature yesterday and had to be readmitted to the hospital.”

“Did he ask for the pain medicine, or did they make him take it?” Ryeowook’s anger from earlier was gone, and concern had replaced it.

“He asked for the pain medicine. I guess he’s sicker than we all thought. I wish he would hurry up and get better,” Sungmin answered, but before he could finish, Ryeowook had turned away. RyeoWook was now searching through the cabinets. Ryeowook sighed in relief as he found the container he was looking for.

“Yes, well, we are all aware of how much you hate singing his part during Bonamana,” Ryeowook said as he poured the soup into a container, and then covered it with a lid.

“Hey, that’s not fair. That isn’t what I meant at all.” Sungmin’s hurt face made Ryeowook pause on his way out of the kitchen with the container of soup in his hand.

“I know. I’m sorry you’re a good friend. I’m just worried now,” Ryeowook told Sungmin, and then hurried out, grabbing his bag on his way out the door.

“You’ve had a feeding tube before young man, and I am about to ask the doctor for another one.” Kyuhyun’s mother informed him. The dinner tray was in front of Kyuhyun on the bedside table, but he hadn't touched it. His mother held up a fork covered with boiled cabbage to his mouth.

The look on Kyuhyun’s face told her exactly what he thought of her threat. The last time he had that tube stuck down his throat, he had been unconscious, and he never wanted to have one put down while when he was awake. “Mom, I would eat if - .” His last words were cut off when he quickly clamped his mouth shut when his mother’s fork got too close.

“Young man you need to listen to your mother. You can’t heal if you don’t eat,” his father said, standing at the foot of the bed.

“If I vomited right now I would die. My head would explode. Do you want to see my exploded head all over the walls?” Kyuhyun managed to get out before his mother could sneak in a bite of food.

“Honey,” his mother said, sighing as she put down the fork. “If you are feeling nauseated, tell the nurses. They will give you something to make you feel better.”

“I’m not nauseated.”

“Then why won’t you eat? Torturing your mother is not acceptable, young man.”

“Torture is having that big old tube crammed down your throat! What if my vocal cords get damaged? What if I can’t sing? I am almost deaf now, so why not just make me mute too?” Kyuhyun said, fiddling with his sheets, as tears began to roll down his face.

Mr. Cho stared at his crying son as if he had turned into a zombie, and then turned to his wife. “He can never have that pain medicine again. I forbid it.”

“You will do no such thing; so what if he’s a little moody. At least he isn’t hurting.”

“He’s crying…….and he almost fell!”

“He lost his balance. He’s very dizzy. They said his equilibrium would be off. He didn’t hurt himself, because you caught him in time.”

“He wanted me to carry him back to bed?”

Mrs. Cho stopped for a moment, thinking of an appropriate response to her grown son expecting his father to carry him back to bed when he was capable of walking. “He is very thin. I’m sure it wouldn’t have hurt you.”

“Dad, its okay; just let me fall and break another hip next time. I wouldn’t want to strain - ” Kyuhyun stopped mid-sentence as Ryeowook walked into the room.

“Mr. and Mrs. Cho - ” Ryeowook managed half a bow before he was engulfed in a bear hug by Kyuhyun’s mother. Ryeowook struggled to breathe as Mrs. Cho clung to him extra tight in her relief at seeing him.

“Ryeowook, darling, sweet, precious boy where have you been? I am so glad to see you,” Mrs. Cho said, finally willing to relinquish Ryeowook from her arms.

“He’s been busy. Just because Kyuhyun planned his own little vacation to parts unknown doesn’t mean the other boys get a break. Working hard is what they all do. They make us all proud,” Kyuhyun’s father said, patting the much smaller man on the back, causing him to stumble a little.

“Well, we were just leaving,” Kyuhyun’s mother quickly said, grabbing her purse, and giving Kyuhyun a kiss on the cheek. She then took her husband by the hand.

“We were? We can’t leave him like this?”

“Ryeowook will keep an eye on him for us. Won’t you, Ryeowook?” Mrs. Cho said as she patted Ryeowook on the face before he had time to answer.

“I really don’t think we should leave him.” Mr. Cho said as he watched his son whose big, watery eyes were locked on Ryeowook.

“We don’t have a choice. I have to stop and get that thing,” she said, leading her husband to the door.

“We do?” Mr. Cho looked at Ryeowook and mouthed the words, “Sorry.”

Mrs. Cho stopped at the doorway and looked back at her son. “Eat something, don’t get out of bed, and don’t let “nothing” get in the way of you feeling better. Love you.” With that, she was gone, dragging her husband along, but she had put enough emphasis on the word “nothing” to make both Ryeowook and Kyuhyun flinch.

“Did you tell your mom?” Ryeowook asked as he shut the door behind Kyuhyun’s parents.

“What you did to me?”

“Uh-huh.” Ryeowook, who had managed not to look at Kyuhyun yet, finally chanced a glance at him, only to find him staring back at him. The minute their eyes met, they both turned away.

“No, do you think she would be hugging you like her long lost child if I had?”

“I’m not really sure what your mom would do…to be honest?” Ryeowook said, taking the seat next to Kyuhyun’s bed.

“Me either, but I’m not going to risk it.” Kyuhyun grabbed his cell phone off the bedside table, nervously opening and closing it repeatedly.

“Thank you.” Ryeowook couldn't help but feel extremely awkward; he needed to talk to Kyuhyun, but the embarrassment was killing him.

“For what?”

“For not telling your mom.”

“Oh, well, you better not have told anybody. I know how you are with Sungmin, and he’s been sniffing around for the real reason.” Kyuhyun was doing his best to remain calm, but he was having trouble keeping his focus.

“No, I’ve done my best to forget…..but I’ve forsaken liquor, so that puts a damper on that idea.”

“You should never drink again, ever. Never, like never ever.” Kyuhyun said uneasily. He hated when people sat in that chair, because he couldn't see them, but at the same time it felt weird to look at Ryeowook.

“I agree. I know I’ve told you before, but I’m really sorry.”

“You should be. You should be very, very sorry.”

“Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. I’m good. Well actually I’m not. I’m like sick and in the hospital. I hate the hospital, and you never came and visited me.” Kyuhyun felt the tears coming again, and even though he tried, he seemed to have no control over any of his emotions.

“I didn’t think you would want to see me.” Ryeowook was beginning to understand why Mr. Cho was against leaving Kyuhyun.

“I don’t like when people sit in that chair.”

Ryeowook got up and walked closer to the bed where a very emotional Kyuhyun could see him. “Why haven’t you had the chair moved then?”

“Because I only told Sungmin, and he didn’t want to look at me, because I look so awful.”

“Kyuhyun, I am sure that wasn’t -” Ryeowook said, instinctively reaching out for Kyuhyun’s swollen cheek, but stopping before he actually touched him. Ryeowook quickly redirected his hand to grab Kyuhyun’s phone.

“What are you doing with my phone?”

“Sungmin didn’t want you to see him, because he was too busy plotting how he was going to steal your phone and send me a fake text message.”

“He what?” Kyuhyun said as he grabbed the phone from Ryeowook, and started going through his sent messages.

“I never.”

“I know.”

“I didn’t.”

“I know.”

“It’s your fault! Why would I apologize?”

“I know.”

“You just had to go and ruin everything,” Kyuhyun accused, putting the phone down and glaring at Ryeowook.

“I know.”

“Stop saying that! Say something else. Fix this!”

“I don’t know how,” Ryeowook answered miserably. “I wish I knew how to make it better. I shouldn’t have done it. I was drunk, and sometimes this need you have for me makes me feel drunk, too. The combination was just too much that night. I’m strange. I do weird things. You know this.”

“So it’s my fault, because I need you?” Kyuhyun spit out, doing his best to glare at Ryeowook…who was looking everywhere but at Kyuhyun.

“You are very needy when it comes to me - and possessive.”

“I’m not…..I’m not that bad.”

“Let’s call Henry and get his input,” Ryeowook suggested. He couldn't help but smile at his friend’s denial, and finally, he found the nerve to really look at his friend.

“Like I care what that American says.”

“He’s from Canada.”

“I don’t care where he is from. It doesn’t matter what he thinks. He isn’t important! He is always trying to steal you away from me. You are my friend!”

“I rest my case.” Now that Ryeowook was really looking at Kyuhyun, his heart was breaking. Kyuhyun had lost so much weight, his eyes were glazed, and the right side of his face was all swollen. He wanted nothing more then to hug his friend, but instead he just continued to stand beside him, not daring to touch him.

“You are my friend….I need you as my friend, but not in that way.”

“I know.”

“I love you, but not like that.”

“I know.” Ryeowook was finding it harder and harder to just look at Kyuhyun and not reach out and touch him. He had always comforted Kyuhyun by touch.

“If you say that again…I am going to get out of this bed and hit you even if it causes my head to explode. You knowing you did wrong doesn’t make anything better. Say something that helps!”

“Kyuhyun, it was a mistake. Think of it as a drunk, crazy moment, and I would never ever think of doing it again. If I had been in my right mind, it would never have happened. I think if you still want to be my friend then…”

“Of course I do, you idiot!”

Ryeowook was overcome with such a feeling of relief that he couldn't help the stupid smile that broke out on his face. “Then, there will be rules. Rule one: I can’t drink anymore around you. Rule two: we can never play at fan service together. Rule three: you have to stay out of my bed.”

“Rule three…..”

“That one can not be negotiated on. I don’t care how crowded it is, how tired we are, how many nightmares you have, or how lonely you are. There has to be absolutely no more sleeping together. Sungmin got rid of his cats, so you can’t use your allergies as an excuse anymore.”

The look of complete and utter horror on Kyuhyun’s face made Ryeowook laugh. “You can go sleep with Yesung. He sleeps like the dead he won’t even know you are there.”

“You make it sound like I’m some kind of fallen woman or something…it wasn’t like that at all. It was more like puppies. I was just comfortable with you. You were like my puppy brother; it wasn’t like you make it sound. I just sleep better when I am with you. Puppies…we are like puppies.”

“We aren’t puppies anymore, even if you look like a kicked one. I know it was totally innocent on your part, but one night when I was very drunk I kissed you. I kissed you, and you hit me. Kyuhyun, I wanted to die…we can’t ever allow that to happen again. ”

“I shouldn’t have hit you. It wasn’t your fault…you were drunk. It was just like an accident. Yes, it was just like an accident.”

“It doesn’t matter if it was an accident or not; it spoiled how comfortable our friendship was, because every time I touch you, no matter how innocent, you are going to remember.”

“I am not. I am going to think you’re my best friend. I refuse to think about that ever again. Rule Four: never ever think about it again,” Kyuhyun said, grabbing Ryeowook’s hand.

Ryeowook just shook his head looking at his semi-hysterical friend. He took his other hand and felt Kyuhyun’s forehead, “Kyuhyun, you are burning up.”

“They already gave me medicine for it,” Kyuhyun said, still holding onto Ryeowook’s hand.

“You have been taking pain medicine too, haven’t you? I can tell. You always get overly affectionate and teary-eyed.”

“I had to take something; it hurt really bad. It wasn’t like before…when I,” Kyuhyun stopped talking as he was distracted by Ryeowook’s hand gently brushing through his hair.

“If you remember before, when it all started, you hurt really bad, too,” Ryeowook warned as he continued to soothe his friend.

“It won’t be like before,” Kyuhyun muttered, closing his eyes and he began to drift off at his friend’s gentle touch.

“You’re right, it won’t be, because I am going to be watching you like a hawk. If you try to pull anything on me, I am going to tell your mom all about what happened in China.”

“Okay,” Kyuhyun said as he yawned. He heard what Ryeowook had said but was not absorbing any of it.

“You are just like a puppy. Always wanting to be petted,” Ryeowook said, pulling his hand away. “But you’re going to have to wake up now.”

“Huh? Why?” Kyuhyun said, awakening as soon as Ryeowook pulled away.

“Because I made soup, and you’re eating it.”

“I would rather sleep.”

“It is soup I made especially for Heechul, and I stole it for you.” Ryeowook said as he rummaged through his bag for the container with the soup.

“I might have some then…since you risked your life and all.”

“So kind of you,” Ryeowook said, pushing the bedside table in position, so Kyuhyun could eat off of it. He sat the soup in front of Kyuhyun and provided him with the spoon from his abandoned dinner tray.

“It’s okay,” Kyuhyun admitted as he gobbled it down.

“Thanks,” Ryeowook said as he took a seat at the end of the bed, and watched his friend eat.

When Kyuhyun was almost finished, he stopped and looked at Ryeowook. “You aren’t going to leave are you?”

“I can’t stay here all night.”

“My mom wouldn’t want you to leave me…I’m very sick. She trusted me with you. There is plenty of room here,” Kyuhyun said, patting the spot next to him on the bed.

“Rule three! Do you remember rule three?” Ryeowook said, shaking his head in disbelief. “There are no exceptions, whatsoever.”

“Then the chair?”

“You want me to stay here and sleep in that uncomfortable chair all night?”

“I offered you the bed, but you refused me.”

“I haven’t seen you in weeks, and now you won’t let me go home.”

“Please stay…I want you to stay,” Kyuhyun said as he finished off his soup. Kyuhyun looked so pitiful that Ryeowook didn’t have the heart to say no.

“Okay, I will stay, but only if your parents don’t return. I really don’t want to be here when you remember everything you said tonight,” Ryeowook answered back at him, as he moved the bedside table out of the way and slowly lowered the head of Kyuhyun’s hospital bed.

“Well at least I didn’t kiss you,” Kyu muttered as he started to drift off again.

“Rule four! You made rule four! You could at least follow it. You rule breaker, you!

Thanks for reading!

From the way you phrased this I wanted to make sure that you knew that there is much more of the story.
